To summarize. I believe there is repeated proof in the movie that Bruno had stopped using his gift long before he went into hiding. I think part of his reasoning for going into hiding was because he realized that it wasn't just his gift was doing harm it was him (that's what I think the townspeople believed and probably would he believed I don't think his family believed that and the audience knows that's not true)
